The production of EDPR reached 21.2 terawatt-hours (TWh) in the first six months of this year, the company announced in information sent to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM).
In North America, production accounted for 60% of the total renewable electricity produced by EDPR between January and June, with Europe contributing 27% and South America 4%.
EDPR increased production in North America by 18%, in South America by 46%, while in Europe it decreased by 6%.
The decline in Europe was “affected by below-average wind resources,” the company stated in the communication to the CMVM, explaining that the increase in South America was driven “by improved wind resources” compared to the first half of 2024 “and new additions of wind and solar capacity” in Brazil.
In terms of technology, wind energy continues to dominate EDPR’s production (78%), but the fastest growth in the first half of this year was in solar (centralized), increasing by 132% compared to the same period in 2024, now representing 20% of the company’s total electricity generation.
Wind production decreased by 1% during the same period.
In the communication to the CMVM, the company indicated that the 12% increase in production in the first half is “based on higher installed capacity.”
According to the data released today, in the last 12 months, EDPR added a gross production capacity of 3.4 GW (gigawatts), with 83% coming from Europe and North America and 68% from solar energy.
“Net capacity additions were partially offset by asset rotation transactions,” including “the deconsolidation” of 0.2 GW in Poland in the third quarter of 2024 and 83 MW (megawatts) in Spain in the second quarter of 2025, covering wind and solar projects.
In the first half of this year alone, EDPR added 0.4 GW of renewable production capacity – 161 MW of wind energy and 257 MW of solar energy.
“By region, North America accounted for 62% of additions, Europe 23%, Asia-Pacific 9%, and South America 6%,” the company reported.
As of June, “capacity under construction was 2.3 GW, supporting the expectation of capacity additions of around 2 GW in 2025, as anticipated,” according to today’s EDPR statement to the CMVM.
EDPR will release its first-half results on July 30.
In the first three months, the company recorded profits of 52 million euros, 24% less than in the same months of 2024, due to a negative impact of 13 million euros from “non-recurring items,” related to “accelerated depreciation” of the Meadow Lake IV wind project in the United States.
Last year, the company reported a net loss of 556 million euros, attributed to negative impacts of “non-recurring items” amounting to 777 million euros, mainly related to the decision not to proceed with projects in Colombia and a “precautionary decision” by Ocean Wind (‘joint venture’ with Engie) to register a 133 million euro impairment in the U.S. business due to regulatory uncertainty surrounding ‘offshore’ projects.
EDP Renováveis, headquartered in Madrid, is a subsidiary majority-owned by the EDP Group (Energias de Portugal) and operates in the renewable energy sector.
