EGF company increased urban waste collection and energy production

In a statement, the company managing 11 concessionaries across 174 municipalities, covering over 60% of the mainland population, has provided an overview of the last year. It compared developments relative to 2023, concluding there was “significant progress” in key operational indicators.

Selective collection reached 694,000 tons in 2024, a rise of 15,380 tons (4% increase).

In terms of waste streams, plastic and metal saw the largest growth, increasing by 7.4% with a total of 108,314 tons. Paper/cardboard rose by 5.2%, reaching 150,057 tons, and glass had a slight growth of 0.3%, totaling 135,532 tons, according to the EGF statement.

Energy production hit 507 GWh (gigawatt-hours), marking a 34.3% growth compared to 2023 and representing an increase of 129 GWh. The rise, the company explains, was primarily due to the full operation of Valorsul’s Energy Recovery Plant.

“The energy generated by EGF in 2024 would be enough to supply a city with 419,000 inhabitants for a year,” states the European company.

Regarding bio-waste, the company reports a “significant increase” of 29% compared to 2023, totaling 129,000 tons.

“Despite the positive results, further growth is required to meet the goals of the Strategic Plan for Urban Waste (PERSU 2030), along with increased investment in the waste sector and the establishment of a public funding policy,” the statement notes.

The management of EGF’s waste treatment and recovery systems is conducted through 11 concessionary companies (Algar, Amarsul, Ersuc, Resiestrela, Resinorte, Resulima, Suldouro, Valorlis, Valorminho, Valnor, Valorsul). These companies, formed in partnership with the served municipalities, process approximately 3.3 million tons of urban waste (RU) annually, as stated in the communication.
