A 55-year-old man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for attempting to murder a 62-year-old taxi driver from Elvas in Olivenza, Badajoz, Spain, approximately a year ago.
The Provincial Court of Badajoz found that the convicted individual attempted to strangle the Portuguese man with the taxi’s seatbelt and stabbed him multiple times, as reported by La Crónica de Badajoz.
The incident occurred on May 15, 2024. The aggressor, whose nationality was not disclosed but is known to also reside in Elvas, Alentejo, requested the taxi driver to take him to Puente Ajuda, Spain, where he was supposedly going to meet some relatives.
However, during the journey, he attacked the victim “unexpectedly and without any apparent reason.” In court, the Portuguese taxi driver confessed that he feared “for his life.”
The convicted man claimed that it was the taxi driver who tried to attack him with a knife after he refused to have sex with him, a version the court deemed not credible.
The publication also revealed that the defendant suffers from a “mental disorder” and had been convicted about 15 years ago for a homicide committed in Badajoz.
Aside from the prison sentence, the defendant is now required to compensate the victim with 12,000 euros due to the injuries inflicted and the resulting consequences from the attack.
