El Corte Inglés’ profit in Portugal rises 33% to 48 million euros

The El Corte Inglés in Portugal achieved a record turnover of 622 million euros for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, marking a 3.9% increase from the previous period, with profits rising by 33% to 48 million euros, it announced today.

In a statement released today, El Corte Inglés stated that the 2024-2025 fiscal year concluded in February 2025, with consolidated profits reaching 512 million euros, a 6.7% increase compared to the prior period, and a turnover of 16.675 billion euros.

In Portugal, El Corte Inglés reported that its EBITDA reached 64 million euros, a 7.5% increase from the previous year, while the group’s consolidated EBITDA rose by 11.9% to 1.209 billion euros.

The Spanish group noted in its statement that “positive results were achieved across all business areas” and highlighted “the strong performance of the group’s companies, including ECIGA, the Portuguese enterprise responsible for two department stores, six supermarkets, and one outlet, reflecting improvements in management efficiency, commitment to customer service, and continuous innovation and focus on product quality.”

“Retail remains the main revenue source for the group with 12.976 billion euros,” and it emphasized “the robust market position in fashion and beauty sections, which saw a 4.9% increase,” the group stated.

Regarding the ‘online’ business sector, the group reported continued growth, registering over 891 million visits across its websites and apps.

“In Portugal, for the 2025-2026 period, the company anticipates continued investment in modernizing commercial spaces and expanding its offerings, both online and in physical stores,” it stated.

El Corte Inglés in Portugal employs over 3,000 people, of which 65.1% are women and 35% are men, with leadership roles equally divided. The majority of the workforce (97%) is on permanent contracts, they noted.

“Acknowledging the significance of social inclusion, the Group has been accommodating individuals facing inequalities in accessing the labor market through internships and subsequent hiring. This includes migrants, people with disabilities, and youth at social risk, thereby promoting a diverse and inclusive work environment,” they explained.

The Spanish group also noted that in 2024, tourism in Portugal reached record levels and that “the El Corte Inglés department stores in Lisbon and Gaia solidified their position as top shopping destinations, recording a 21.6% increase in sales to tourists compared to 2023.”
