Elderly man accused of sexually abusing granddaughter and friend in Vila Viçosa

A 72-year-old man has been charged by the Public Prosecutor’s Office with two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child in early October. The victims are two girls, aged 11 and 12, one of whom is the granddaughter of the accused.

The man was charged on October 2, revealed a statement from the Prosecutor’s Office of the Comarca de Évora.

The incidents took place on July 16 in Borba, within the residence of the accused.

“The accused was detained at the end of July and remains under the measure of preventive detention,” the prosecution indicated.

The two girls “were subjected to a special protection measure [statements for future memory], which involves their preliminary testimony during the investigation phase by an Investigating Judge, generally making their presence unnecessary during the trial,” the statement added.

On July 30, the Judiciary Police (PJ) announced the detention of a 72-year-old Portuguese man suspected of sexually abusing two girls.

The crimes occurred while the elderly man was alone at home with the minors and were reported by one of the victim’s mothers following a complaint from the girl. The National Republican Guard (GNR) was alerted, and the PJ began the investigation on July 17.

After being presented for initial judicial questioning at the Évora Court, the man was subjected to the most severe precautionary measure — preventive detention.

A PJ source told Lusa that the man, a former GNR military officer, was sent to Évora Prison, designated for inmates who are or have been in security forces, and others needing special protection.

The investigation was conducted by the Department of Investigation and Penal Action (DIAP) of Vila Viçosa with the support of the Judiciary Police of Évora.
