Elderly man missing in Santarém was found fallen in a bramble

A 90-year-old man, reported missing last week, has been found by the National Republican Guard (GNR).

The alert was raised by a relative after the man disappeared on the afternoon of September 18, a Thursday.

The GNR officers promptly initiated the necessary police procedures to locate him.

During the operation, conducted at night, the man was found in a remote and hard-to-access area. According to a statement from Notícias ao Minuto, he was discovered lying in a bush thicket, approximately two kilometers from his home.

The victim was rescued and subsequently examined by the Santarém Volunteer Firefighters before being transported to a hospital.

The operation was reinforced by members of the Environmental Protection Unit (NPA) of the Santarém Territorial Detachment, along with several volunteers who actively participated in the search.

The GNR emphasized the importance of caring for the elderly, noting the effort put into locating missing persons and preventing such incidents.

The security force offers the following advice:

  • Family members should assess if the elderly are in full physical and mental capacity to go out alone without the risk of getting lost;
  • They should be aware of the elderly’s routines and know their intended destinations when they leave home, so if delayed, their search can begin there;
  • Whenever possible, the elderly should carry a charged mobile phone, allowing contact with family in emergencies and easier location through cellular tracking;
  • The elderly should always have their family contacts with them, enabling others to reach out in case of disorientation.
