The fire resulted in six confirmed deaths, along with 25 injuries, five of which are severe, as confirmed by the president of the Mirandela City Council.
The injured individuals have been transported to hospitals in Mirandela, Bragança, and Macedo de Cavaleiros.
Mayor Vítor Correia further stated that at 09:30, residents of the care home who were uninjured began to be relocated to other nursing homes operated by the Misericórdia, with assistance requested from neighboring fire departments for the transport of bedridden seniors.
The municipality is also providing psychological, logistical, and nutritional support to the relatives of the residents, directing them to the Victim Support Center, set up in the INATEL pavilion.
The process of transferring the elderly is taking place near the care home, where several adjustable beds are set up. Nearby, there are numerous fire engines and ambulances.
The fire occurred at approximately five in the morning, originating from an anti-decubitus mattress, according to Adérito Gomes, the provider of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Mirandela.
The alarm was raised by the three staff members on duty.
