Elderly person dies at Porto da Areia Sul beach in Peniche

The alert was issued at 2:45 PM to the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center, reporting that “a man had fallen into the water.”

In response, crew members from the Life-saving Station, elements of the Maritime Police and Volunteer Firefighters from Peniche, and the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) were immediately activated.

While the emergency teams were en route to the scene, “a person in the area, after seeing the victim in the water, jumped in to rescue him but was unable to extract him, eventually exiting on their own,” stated the National Maritime Authority.

The man, approximately 80 years old, was retrieved by a member of the Maritime Police in an unconscious state and transported to the beach.

The victim then underwent resuscitation attempts by Peniche firefighters and INEM, but “it was not possible to reverse the situation.”

After the doctor certified the death on site, the body was transported to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Torres Vedras.

The Psychology Department of the Maritime Police was activated.

According to a source from the West Emergency and Civil Protection Sub-Command, a vessel along with 15 operatives and seven vehicles, including the Emergency Medical and Resuscitation Vehicle from Caldas da Rainha of INEM, were present at the scene.

The Maritime Police are investigating the cause of death.
