Elections, Eurovision, soccer, and religion. Next weekend filled.

The upcoming weekend of May 10 and 11 promises to be eventful on the national calendar, featuring the Eurovision Song Contest final, the inaugural Mass of Pope Leo XIV, legislative elections, and the final round of the Portuguese football championship.

To start, the final of the Eurovision Song Contest is scheduled for May 17 in Basel, Switzerland. The confirmation of whether Portugal advances to the finals will be known on May 13.

The inaugural Mass of Pope Leo XIV, marking his appointment, will take place on May 18, just five days after May 13, a date that commemorates the apparition of the Virgin Mary to the three shepherd children in Fátima. Many people, including Portuguese citizens, participate in a pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Fátima on this day.

The anticipated legislative elections will also occur on May 18, following the decision by President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to call for elections after a vote of no confidence against the government.

The final round of the Portuguese football championship is expected to take place between May 17 and 18, where the champion will be determined following the tie between SL Benfica and Sporting CP last Saturday, delaying the final outcome.

It should be noted that Benfica and Sporting drew 1-1 in a derby match that could have decided the final standings of the 2024/25 season of the Portuguese Primeira Liga. Sporting remains in first place, maintaining an advantage over Benfica with equal points.
