Elections in images: A resignation, “greetings to the family” and history made

The key players from last year’s Legislative elections maintain their positions at the forefront, but the narrative has shifted. In 2024, the political landscape leaned to the right, resulting in a reinforcement of the political forces representing these views.

The AD, although not securing an absolute majority, won the elections and increased its tally of elected deputies by nine compared to 11 months ago. The coalition led by Montenegro now holds 89 seats in parliament.

While votes from expatriate districts are still pending, the Socialist Party (PS) and Chega both currently possess 58 deputies, though PS has garnered more votes overall.

It was a night marked by defeat for the Left, with only the Livre party gaining two additional deputies, while other parties experienced losses. The secretary-general of PS, Pedro Nuno Santos, tendered his resignation, seeking to step down promptly to avoid being an “obstacle” in the party’s decision-making processes, which are now headed for internal elections. José Luís Carneiro is set to run for the position.

For the Right, the night was one of jubilation. Luís Montenegro emphasized that Portugal does not wish for any prime minister other than himself, as evidenced by the election results. Speaking on stage with his family, he remarked, “I want to salute my family, today more than ever. My blood family and my political family.”

At Chega’s campaign headquarters, André Ventura highlighted that while the party did not win, it “made history.” “We gave what we could give. We didn’t win these elections, but we made history. And make no mistake: nothing will be the same after tonight,” he declared.
