Elevator. Carris ensures support for victims and collaboration in investigations.

The derailment of the Glória elevator, managed by Carris, resulted in 16 fatalities and left dozens injured, including both Portuguese nationals and foreign tourists of various nationalities.

Today, in a statement, Carris emphasized that its priority “from the very first moment was to provide full support to the victims and their families through its Social Support Office, in close collaboration with the Lisbon City Council and insurer Fidelidade.”

Among the measures taken, the company highlighted psychological support and material assistance to the family of André Marques, the brake operator, including covering funeral expenses and providing a scholarship for his children, as well as support to other involved workers.

The insurer also ensured the repatriation and funeral services for six foreign victims and is reimbursing the families of five others.

For the five Portuguese victims, proceedings are being conducted under the work accident legislation.

For the severely injured individuals of various nationalities, repatriation to hospitals in their home countries has been organized, with medical accompaniment and psychological support provided by the insurer.

Meanwhile, those with minor injuries have maintained contact with the insurer for monitoring injuries and addressing needs, the transport company reports.

Simultaneously, Carris confirms its cooperation with ongoing investigations by the Office for the Prevention and Investigation of Aircraft and Railway Accidents (GPIAAF) and the Public Prosecutor’s Office, having also initiated its internal inquiry and commissioned an independent external audit.

On an operational level, the company noted that the Bica and Lavra funiculars, as well as the Santa Justa elevator, remain closed and are undergoing external inspections by an independent entity, with reports to be validated by a committee including the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LNEC), Instituto Superior Técnico, and the Order of Engineers, before a reopening decision is made.

As an alternative, Carris established or adjusted neighborhood routes, launching the 51E route to replace the Glória elevator.

On September 18, the company honored brake operator André Marques by naming the articulated tram 601, which already runs through the streets of Lisbon, after him.
