Elevator. PCP proposes evaluation committee to “enhance safety”

A member of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) on the Lisbon City Council (CML), João Ferreira, announced that the party has proposed the formation of an evaluation committee to “enhance safety” and “improve inspection and maintenance conditions” of Carris elevators following the derailment of the Glória Elevator, which resulted in 16 deaths and more than 20 injuries.

“We proposed the formation of an evaluation committee, including members from Carris municipal services, workers’ representative organizations, and institutions from the national scientific and technological system, aiming to enhance inspection and maintenance conditions,” he stated to journalists after an extraordinary CML meeting.

João Ferreira highlighted the goal of addressing concerns raised by the Office for the Prevention and Investigation of Aircraft and Rail Accidents (GPIAAF) and achieving “a more precise definition of existing redundancies, potentially proposing new elements to reinforce operational safety at this level.”

The communist councilor also emphasized the need to assess the “necessary conditions for future internalization of the maintenance service at Carris, reclaiming a role the company once had but no longer maintains.”

The councilor explained that the meeting, which included Carris President Pedro de Brito Bogas, did not resolve “all doubts” about the derailment but provided better understanding of “the already initiated audit process’s content and nature.”

“Not all doubts were resolved because there are questions still unanswered, but we managed to better grasp the content and nature of the already initiated audit process. It does not replace the more in-depth process we suggest,” he added.

The Vice President of CML, Filipe Anacoreta Correia (CDS-PP), presented proposals from the PSD/CDS-PP leadership to address the Glória Elevator accident, ranging from victim support to the design of a new technological system for the elevator.

“What is unequivocal is that we must ensure maximum safety, and without unequivocal answers that reassure the entire city and country regarding its operation, it is natural that we cannot proceed,” he stated.

The Glória Elevator, managed by Carris, derailed on Wednesday afternoon, causing 16 deaths and two dozen injuries, involving both Portuguese and foreign nationals from various countries.
