A request for a meeting on September 25th has been made following two media reports that revealed a series of previously undisclosed facts, exposing omissions and inconsistencies, notes the PS councilor.
At issue are two previous accidents, in October 2024 and May 2025, which were publicly denied by the chairman of Carris’ Board of Directors and the deputy mayor but have now been confirmed by Carris itself, according to the request by the socialist councilors.
Pedro Anastácio told Lusa that “Carris has also confirmed the existence of these two accidents, indicating a plan of falsehood regarding what was communicated in the City Council and publicly by political leaders and the chairman of Carris’ Board of Directors.”
“We submitted this request to immediately confront the City Council and the chairman of Carris’ Board of Directors with this series of falsehoods, omissions, and inconsistencies, and from there we will assess what the political consequences should be,” he explained.
Besides the accidents, other information needs clarification, such as a letter from the Carris Workers’ Commission sent to the mayor on September 20, 2023, warning of “deficient vehicle maintenance.”
Another aspect of this request is the demand for access to some documents, such as this letter, reports of the accidents in October 2024 and May 2025, and reports on maintenance and safety issues from the two years preceding the accident.
The Glória elevator, managed by Carris, derailed on September 3rd in an accident that resulted in 16 fatalities and dozens of injuries, involving Portuguese and foreigners of various nationalities.
