The Public Prosecutor’s Office announced on Tuesday that following the collection of extensive documentary and material evidence from the Elevador da Glória accident, witnesses have also begun to be heard. The proceedings are under “judicial secrecy”.

In a statement sent to the press, the Public Prosecutor’s Office reported that all necessary measures have already been taken, in collaboration with the relevant authorities, and that the Institute of Legal Medicine confirmed “the identity of all 16 fatalities in the derailment”.

“The victims, eight women and eight men, were aged between 36 and 82. Five were Portuguese, three from the United Kingdom, two from South Korea, two Canadians (one with dual Canadian and Moroccan nationality), one Swiss, one French, one Ukrainian, and one American,” it reads.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office states that “this information, being relevant to the inquiry opportunely initiated, is included therein”. “In the scope of this inquiry, extensive documentary and material evidence has already been collected, and witness hearings have begun.”

The inquiry is led by the Regional DIAP of Lisbon, with “judicial secrecy” decreed, and will proceed with “the competent and appropriate technical examinations”.

The Elevador da Glória in Lisbon derailed on Wednesday, resulting in 16 deaths and approximately two dozen injuries.

The Elevador da Glória is managed by Carris, connecting the Restauradores to the Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara in Bairro Alto over a distance of about 265 meters and is popular with tourists.
