Eleven of the 18 districts of mainland Portugal, mainly in the center and south of the territory, are under a yellow warning today due to hot weather, with an orange warning for Portalegre, Évora and Beja expected for Friday and Saturday, the IPMA said.

This Thursday, a public holiday in Portugal, the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) issued a yellow warning for the districts of Braga, Coimbra, Castelo Branco, Leiria, Santarém, Portalegre, Lisbon, Évora, Setúbal, Beja and Faro, with the forecast of “persistently high maximum temperatures”.

There are seven districts in mainland Portugal without weather warnings for this Thursday, namely Viana do Castelo, Vila Real, Bragança, Porto, Aveiro, Viseu and Guarda.

Also due to the hot weather, from Friday until Saturday, there are three districts under an orange warning, which are Portalegre, Évora and Beja, with the “persistence of very high values of the maximum temperature”, indicated the IPMA.

In addition to these three districts under orange warning, between Friday and Saturday there are another 11 under yellow warning, namely Braga, Vila Real, Bragança, Guarda, Coimbra, Castelo Branco, Leiria, Santarém, Lisbon, Setúbal and Faro.

With regard to the Autonomous Region of Madeira, the IPMA has issued a yellow warning for this Thursday for the north coast, the south coast and the mountainous regions, forecasting an orange warning between Friday and Saturday for the south coast and the mountainous regions.

In the Azores, the weather forecast has issued a yellow warning for Thursday and Friday for the western, central and eastern parts of the archipelago.

The yellow warning, the least serious on a scale of three, is issued by the IPMA whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities dependent on the weather situation, while the orange warning, the second most serious, is issued whenever there is a weather situation of moderate to high risk.
