The Appleton announced today that an exhibition featuring works from 12 artists and collectives aims to offer a profound reflection on the passage of time in contemporary art. It seeks to create a dialogue between different generations of artists and build bridges between the past, present, and future.
Participants in the exhibition include Albano Silva Pereira, Ana Hatherly, Belén Uriel, Joana Villaverde, Michael Biberstein, Osso Exótico, Pedro Diniz Reis, Pedro Falcão, Sara Graça, Sara & André, Sara Mealha, and Susana Mendes Silva. Many of their works are being presented for the first time.
According to a statement, the pieces explore themes such as the relationship between art and heritage, politics, temporality in matter and perception, and affection. The program also features performances, concerts, and mediation sessions.
Titled ‘Diante do Tempo,’ the program was designed by Appleton’s founder and director, Vera Appleton. It revisits works of artists who have played a significant role in the history of Appleton, located in Lisbon’s Alvalade district, supplemented by new creations and specific documentation.
The exhibition will include texts by curators and art historians, guided tours, conversations, and a special season of the Appleton Podcast. The project will culminate in the publication of a book featuring images and texts about the showcased works.
The exhibition is set to open on April 12 at the MACE in Elvas, with the inauguration including “two special moments: a guided tour of the exhibition by the artists and authors of the texts, led by Vera Appleton, and the presentation of the work ‘Kalliope’ by the collective Osso Exótico at the São Mateus Auditorium. This will mark the beginning of a project that the same collective will present at the Centro de Cultura Contemporânea de Castelo Branco in November 2025 and in Lisbon in March 2026.”
This year marks the 18th anniversary of Appleton, which is organizing ‘Diante do Tempo’ in collaboration with the MACE, the Centro de Cultura Contemporânea de Castelo Branco, the Centro de Artes Visuais in Coimbra, and Córtex Frontal in Arraiolos.
This partnership was formed as part of the Rede Portuguesa de Arte Contemporânea (RPAC).
