A 33-year-old man has been arrested by the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) through the Northern Directorate, strongly suspected of committing an urban arson crime.
The incident occurred at 9 AM on Tuesday, September 2nd, in a building comprising four detached dwellings located in São Martinho do Campo, Santo Tirso.
“The fire is believed to have been started using direct flame, in a context of emotional imbalance, with the defendant showing no motivation or justification for his actions,” the Polícia Judiciária stated in a communiqué released to the newsrooms today.
The inspectors also reported that “the residence occupied by the now detained individual was not the only one at risk,” as “the other structures and remaining residents were also in danger. These are contiguous dwellings with shared walls and of somewhat antiquated construction, facilitating fire spread.”
The detainee will be presented to the competent judicial authority for an initial judicial interrogation and the application of appropriate coercive measures.
