Energy. What is the best (and cheapest) way to heat the house

The most efficient and cost-effective method to heat a home is by using air conditioning or pellet stoves, DECO PROteste explains, although the best choice depends on various factors.

“The answer depends on the type of housing, thermal insulation, actual heating needs, and whether cooling is required during the warm season, among other factors. However, the solutions with the best cost-benefit ratio and environmental impact are air conditioning and pellet stoves,” the consumer protection organization states.

Calculations show that “to achieve the same amount of heat, a pellet stove can save 96 euros annually compared to a fan heater.”

“With air conditioning, the savings rise to 110 euros annually. The calculations consider a scenario of use for four hours a day, five days a week, over a period of five months,” it is noted.

Is air conditioning worth using in winter?

Yes, it is one of the most efficient, fast, and comfortable ways to heat a home. The latest models consume little energy, are quick and silent to climatize the space, and can be controlled remotely via smartphones,” DECO PROTeste observes.

On the other hand, “pellet stoves are ideal for those seeking energy efficiency with a minimal environmental footprint. They burn wood waste (pellets), which are considered CO₂ neutral.”

Do portable heaters make sense?

Yes, but only for occasional use. They remain popular (existing in 65% of homes) due to their low purchase price but have higher electric consumption, environmental impact, and are not suitable for heating entire rooms,” as stated on the consumer protection organization’s website.

So, which heating system is the cheapest?

According to DECO PROTeste, “air conditioning, if used sparingly, offers the best annual energy costs, followed by pellet stoves.”

Tips to save more energy when heating your home

The organization mentions, “even with a good heater, thermal insulation is the most determining factor,” since “poorly insulated homes lose heat through windows, doors, and walls.”

DECO PROteste reveals that “many consumers are incurring unexpected expenses to take advantage of the offer.” Discover what is at stake and follow the recommendations of the consumer protection organization.

The organization also provides the following tips:

  • Invest in double-glazed windows or thermal films;
  • use thick curtains at night;
  • seal windows and use draft stoppers to limit air entry under doors leading outside;
  • keep doors closed in heated areas;
  • heat only occupied rooms.

“The best way to maintain a comfortable temperature at home is to improve the building envelope by opting for more efficient windows or enhancing the home’s thermal insulation. When this isn’t possible, choosing an efficient heating system with lower energy costs and reduced CO2 emissions is crucial to make energy needs and interior comfort align,” DECO PROteste concludes.
