“Equipped investigation.” PJ inaugurates new facilities in the Algarve

“The presence of the Polícia Judiciária in a region with these characteristics requires both physical and human resources for a well-prepared and equipped criminal investigation,” stated Rita Alarcão Júdice.

The new facilities of the PJ in Faro represent an investment of 5.7 million euros, of which 2.2 million euros were funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).

This new location replaces the former premises situated in Faro’s historic center, where the PJ had operated since the 1990s. According to the government official, these facilities no longer meet the current needs or demands in terms of location, accessibility, size, and modern functionalities.

The Ministry of Justice revealed that the decision to refurbish an old building was the “best choice,” offering significantly lower costs compared to constructing a new building from scratch.

This refurbishment included several enhancements, notably waterproofing of the roof, installation of solar panels for energy self-consumption, replacement of lighting with LED technology, and improvements to the glazed surfaces.

The building expansion catered to additional storage spaces for weapons, ammunition, forensic equipment, and crime science materials, in addition to areas for securing seized objects.

“Citizens, including the most vulnerable among them, will be received in appropriate facilities, such as rooms for interviewing victims of sexual abuse or domestic violence, along with spaces for accommodating children who have suffered mistreatment or sexual abuse,” said Rita Alarcão Júdice.

The government official also praised the “collaborative process” between the Municipality of Faro, the University of Algarve, and the Ministry of Justice, which involved the exchange and provision of properties outlined in a government decree from 2021.

She recalled that this initiative began during the Socialist government under the then-Minister of Justice, Francisca Van Dunem.

Luís Neves, the national director of the Polícia Judiciária, who also attended the ceremony, expressed his satisfaction with the inauguration of the new building, emphasizing its importance in enhancing the stature of the security force through “decent facilities.”

“We are particularly happy for our people here. Victims, the aggrieved, every citizen deserves equal treatment,” he added.

The PJ has been in Faro since 1976 and currently employs over 160 workers, including 125 inspectors.
