In the framework of the legislative elections on May 18, the media regulator has noted the dissemination of supposed electoral opinion studies on social media that do not originate from companies accredited by the ERC, the entity stated on its official website.
“These situations have a high potential for misinformation and are currently subject to investigation processes initiated by the regulator,” stated the ERC.
The media regulator reiterates the importance of key elements necessary for citizens to assess the legality and statistical reliability of polls. These include verification by an ERC-accredited company and the mandatory filing of the poll with the entity before its dissemination.
Another crucial factor is that the poll must be published and disseminated by media outlets and accompanied by a set of obligatory elements (commonly known as a disclosure technical sheet), which include the identification of the responsible entity and the client, the target universe, sample size, sampling method, response rate, sample distribution, and error margins, the ERC added.
