At the onset of an event marking the end of the legislative campaign for the party, Rui Fonseca e Castro was identified by the PSP. The police informed him of the Lisbon City Council President’s directive, stating that no street demonstration was permitted, and supporters could only gather in Martim Moniz Square.
The PSP recognized Rui Fonseca e Castro as the organizer of the event and will forward the report to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Throughout the afternoon, under the constant observation of PSP officers, supporters of the Ergue-te party listened to several speeches protesting against immigration, repeatedly chanted “Portugal,” and waved Portuguese flags and pig-shaped balloons.
In statements to the press, Rui Fonseca e Castro expressed confidence that the party would elect a deputy for the Lisbon constituency on the upcoming Sunday. He also hoped the party would eventually join the government.
The Lisbon City Council President opposed Ergue-te’s request for a demonstration, based on the PSP’s recommendation, citing a “real and well-founded risk of public order disturbance.”
