The Commission announced that “this agreement ensures that EU fleets can fish up to 288,000 tons, for a value exceeding 1.2 billion euros”.
The Commission considers the agreement to be of “particular importance, as the stocks involved constitute the essential common resources of the EU with third countries in the Northeast Atlantic”.
According to the Commission, the EU and the United Kingdom negotiated based on the “best available scientific information on the status of fish stocks,” while also taking into account the economic situation “to avoid situations of impasse that could lead to the premature closure of some fisheries”.
