EU-US Agreement? “It will be very demanding for Europe,” says Rangel

The Foreign Minister, Paulo Rangel, stated on Tuesday that the tariff agreement between the United States and the European Union brings “predictability and stability to trade relations.” However, he emphasized that it is a “very demanding agreement.”

“The agreement, as the Prime Minister highlighted, has the advantage of bringing predictability and stability to trade relations that were concerning many people. It is an agreement that will be very demanding for Europe,” he noted in statements to RTP3 during the United Nations conference, which is taking place in New York, United States.

He added: “Obviously, we did not want, as is evident, this trade tension and the final result. This is the possible outcome.”

Paulo Rangel argued that Europe should “continue to fight for more free trade agreements,” citing Mercosul as an example.

He also mentioned the need to “find new markets for Portuguese companies” and for the Government “to give them some support.”

“Yesterday [Monday] the programs currently underway were widely announced by the Ministry of Economy, and some measures were even anticipated,” he said, noting that there should be a “Portuguese internal reform to lower context costs.”

On the previous Sunday, the United States and the European Union reached a trade agreement, with tariffs set at 15%.

The US and the EU “reached an agreement,” announced the US President at the end of a meeting with the President of the European Commission. “It was a very interesting negotiation. I think it will be great for both sides,” the Republican added, indicating that the agreement provides for the application of 15% tariffs on European exports.

The agreement also includes the EU’s commitment to purchase $750 billion (approximately 642 billion euros) worth of American energy—aimed specifically at replacing Russian gas—and an additional investment of $600 billion (514 billion euros), along with increasing the acquisition of military equipment.

The two main trading powers exchange approximately 4.4 billion euros in goods and services daily, and Washington had threatened to impose, starting August 1, 30% tariffs on all European imports.

On Monday, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro noted that the agreement established between the United States and the European Union (EU), which includes the application of 15% tariffs on exports starting August 1, offers “predictability and stability,” which he described as “vital for Portuguese businesses and the economy.”

“The EU-US trade agreement brings predictability and stability, vital for Portuguese businesses and the economy. It avoids escalation but places new demands on the fight for more trade agreements, the reduction of barriers, and the transformative agenda of simplification and cost reduction,” wrote Luís Montenegro on the social network X (Twitter).
