“I had an open two-hour exchange with the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, and Ambassador Jamieson Greer, and I was quite clear: the tariffs are harmful and unjustified,” European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Maros Sefcovic, wrote on social media.
The European commissioner emphasized that the relationship between the U.S. and the European Union “needs a fresh approach,” advocating for cooperation while warning that the European Union “will defend its interests.”
The European Commission engaged in negotiations with Washington today regarding the customs tariffs that the United States will impose on imports of European Union products.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday new American tariffs of 20% on products imported from the EU, adding to the existing 25% tariffs on the automotive, steel, and aluminum sectors.
Trump’s new tariffs are an attempt to boost the U.S. industry while penalizing countries for what he described as years of unfair trade practices.
