“The conclusions [of the European Council] are unequivocal,” stated Luís Montenegro during a press conference at a European Council meeting in Brussels.
The Prime Minister highlighted a “strong concern” among the leaders of the 27 EU countries about “unblocking all humanitarian flows,” following a blockade by Israel on the entry of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian population since the beginning of March.
Luís Montenegro described the situation in the Palestinian enclave as “catastrophic” and “beyond the limit.”
In response to international pressure, the Israeli government has allowed some trucks with humanitarian aid to pass, but the United Nations and various non-governmental organizations warned that this aid is insufficient to meet the needs of the Palestinian population.
Regarding the revision of the association agreement with Israel, the head of the executive mentioned that the EU Heads of State and Government are awaiting a proposal from the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, to review or even suspend it.
A report indicated that Israel may have violated Article 2 of the association agreement with the EU, which covers respect for human rights as an essential element of relations between Tel Aviv and the European political-economic bloc.
