At 18:06 Lisbon time, the euro was trading at 1.1388 dollars, as compared to 1.1447 dollars at the same time on Thursday.
The euro fell against the pound but rose relative to the yen.
The European Central Bank (ECB) set the euro reference exchange rate at 1.1411 dollars.
In today’s session, the euro fluctuated between 1.1372 and 1.1457 dollars.
More than 50 Chinese military aircraft flew near Taiwan within 37 hours, coinciding with a phone call between the Chinese and U.S. presidents, the Taiwanese government announced today.
This marks the highest number of incursions recorded since April 1, when China launched large-scale military exercises around Taiwan.
This increase in Chinese military activity began on the same day when Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation about the growing trade tensions between the two powers.
Xi insisted that Washington should handle the Taiwan issue with caution so that “radical separatists engaged in ‘Taiwan independence’ cannot drag China and the United States into the dangerous ground of confrontation and even conflict.”
Taiwan has been self-governing since 1949 under the name Republic of China and maintains its own military and distinct political, economic, and social systems.
For more than seven decades, the United States has been at the center of disputes between the two sides, as Washington is the main supplier of arms to Taipei.
Also announced today was the U.S. unemployment rate holding steady at 4.2%, with 139,000 new jobs created in May, below the April report of 147,000, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL).
These figures do not include jobs in the agricultural sector.
The numbers released today are below the 12-month average, which stands at 149,000 new jobs.
