The euro also gained against the pound but fell against the yen.
The European Central Bank set the euro’s reference exchange rate at 1.1690 dollars.
On Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to impose a 30% tariff on imports from the European Union and Mexico starting August 1.
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated that Brussels remains willing to negotiate with the U.S. to reach an agreement before August 1 but warned that it will also “take all necessary measures to safeguard” its interests, “including adopting proportional countermeasures if necessary.”
