There are issues involving failures in executing all administrative and control tasks necessary for the effective implementation of European maritime safety legislation, a statement reported.
The European maritime safety legislation sets safety requirements for ships, port facilities, and ports, and outlines procedures for maritime safety inspections.
Brussels emphasizes that these measures are crucial to enhance port safety against the threat of intentional unlawful acts and to increase the resilience of the EU’s critical infrastructure.
Following the sending of a formal notification letter, Portugal now has two months to respond and rectify the deficiencies identified by the European Commission.
If a satisfactory response is not provided, the Commission may decide to issue a reasoned opinion, the second of three stages in an infringement procedure.
