European Commission will have a plan for “affordable housing later this year”

“We will present a European plan for affordable housing later this year,” announced Von der Leyen, adding that the “first European Housing Summit” will be convened in 2026 to coordinate solutions to some of the challenges faced.

At the final press conference of the European Council meeting, the Commission’s leader expressed her gratitude to European Council President António Costa for placing this “crucial topic on the agenda.”

Costa noted that European leaders need to care for citizens, with “housing being one of the main concerns.”

The housing debate, he added, was “very useful and concrete,” providing political guidance for preparing affordable housing plans.

EU leaders met today in Brussels, with affordable housing on the agenda.

The EU is facing a housing crisis due to a significant increase in house prices and rents. According to European Council data, Lisbon, Barcelona, and Madrid are the EU cities where residents allocate a higher percentage of their salary to housing costs.
