European Council approves fishing agreement between EU and United Kingdom for the year

The Council has approved an agreement reached with the United Kingdom regarding fishing opportunities for 95 total allowable catches (TAC) for stocks jointly managed by the EU and the UK under the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA), it was highlighted.

According to the Council, the agreement ensures the fishing rights of EU fishermen in the Atlantic and the North Sea until 2026, and its timely conclusion will provide stability and security to EU fishermen and the industry.

The same note reports that the EU and the UK based their agreement on the best available scientific advice, particularly from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). The agreement achieved contributes to the goals of the EU’s common fisheries policy, namely ensuring fisheries are ecologically, economically, and socially sustainable.

The agreement is in line with the Trade and Cooperation Agreement established with the United Kingdom, it was assured.

During the Agriculture and Fisheries Council meeting on Thursday and Friday, ministers will seek to reach a political agreement on the overall fishing opportunities in the Atlantic and the North Sea for stocks managed independently by the EU, with the data relating to the stocks shared between the EU and the UK being incorporated into that overall political agreement.

The new quotas will be applicable from January 1.
