European funds. “Portugal receives more from the EU than it pays” (how much?)

Portugal has been receiving more financial aid from European Union (EU) funds than it contributes, as announced by the Banco de Portugal (BdP) in connection with Europe Day this week.

“Portugal receives more than it contributes to the EU. The average difference since 1996 has been 1.6% of GDP,” stated a post by the BdP shared on Instagram.

In the same post, the banking supervisor highlighted that the “funds received by Portugal from the European Union are an essential support for the country’s economic development.”

According to the BdP, last year alone, Portugal received 6.130 million euros in EU funds, equating to 2.2% of GDP.

Conversely, our country transferred 2,428 million euros to the EU, amounting to 0.9% of GDP.
