Eurovision? Final was the most watched show on Saturday, says Universal McCann

The 69th edition took place in Basel, Switzerland, with Austria emerging as the grand winner, while Portugal was represented by the Madeiran band Napa with the song “Deslocado,” securing the 21st position.

The Eurovision final, broadcast on Saturday night by RTP1, recorded an average viewership of 867,000 viewers and a share of 20.5%, according to UM.

“The final registered the lowest average viewership of the last four years,” noted Universal McCann. It is important to remember that the start of the final coincided with the end of national football championship matches and the beginning of Sporting’s championship celebration.

This combination of events “seems to have negatively impacted the viewing levels of the Eurovision final, causing it to fall short of previous years’ numbers,” it was noted.

“As usual, the semi-finals and final were broadcast on RTP1, hosted by José Carlos Malato and Nuno Galopim,” the report recalled.

The first semi-final, in which Portugal participated, took place on May 13 and was the fifth most-watched program of the day, with an average viewership of 752,000 and a share of 15.5%.

This year’s semi-final “achieved a higher viewership than that of 2024, where Portugal was represented by Iolanda with the song ‘Grito’.

Analyzing the overall day’s audience, “despite Sporting’s championship celebration, the Eurovision final impacted RTP1’s viewership, making the public television station the most-watched channel with a share of 12.3% (+2.7 percentage points vs. the previous week).”

SIC came in second with a share of 11.8%, followed by TVI with a share of 11.4%.

The profile analysis of the final “indicates that the program appealed more to female audiences and older viewers (45+ years). Despite recording lower viewership than previous editions, the Eurovision final was the most-watched program of the day,” it concluded.
