“Even before the political crisis, we already had a PM who avoided scrutiny”

Pedro Nuno Santos addressed journalists at the headquarters of the Socialist Party in Lisbon, where the party is continuing its debate sessions for the Electoral Program for the 2025 Legislative Elections.

The Secretary-General of the Socialist Party began by analyzing the current political situation in Portugal, noting that even before this “political crisis, we already had a Prime Minister who was avoiding scrutiny.”

Referring to the controversies involving Luís Montenegro, which led to the downfall of his administration, Pedro Nuno Santos remarked that he “very rarely confronted journalists to talk and be accountable about the country and the policies he was pursuing,” considering that when the current crisis began, “these doubts increased.”

“A politician cannot escape or avoid scrutiny,” the socialist asserted, reminding that this is “a consequence of being in this activity” and that “we will not have a healthy democracy if politicians think they can evade it.”
