Évora Contemporary Dance Company premieres ‘Uncertain Moves’

The CDCE has announced that the national debut of this choreographic work will take place at 9:30 PM on Saturday at the Salão Central Eborense, with an additional performance scheduled at the same venue the following day at 4:00 PM.

This production is a collaboration between CDCE and JÁ International Theater, included in the 2025 program of the Alentejo-based company. It has benefitted from artistic residencies supported by C.A.M. – Centro Artes Marvila and Teatro Meridional in Lisbon.

According to CDCE, this new creation by Nélia Pinheiro “takes the question ‘Who am I to you?’ as a starting point to explore issues of identity, transformation, and memory.”

“The piece draws inspiration from Greek myths—from Uranus to Zeus, including Cronos and Rhea—to reflect on cycles of creation and repetition. Narcissus and Echo appear as images of seeking the other as a mirror of oneself,” it summarized.

The performance, between the physicality of gesture and visual narrative, offers an experience where “the body becomes language and a place of questioning,” establishing itself as “a creation that questions the role of humans in times of change,” the company’s statement reads.

The artistic team comprises Portuguese and English performers from the fields of dance and theater.

The artistic direction and choreography are led by Nélia Pinheiro, with Suresh Nampuri as co-artistic director.

José António Tenente is responsible for the costumes, Nuno Meira for lighting design, Inês Teles for set design, and Gonçalo Almeida Andrade for music.
