Évora court increases sentence for man convicted of assaulting ex who died

The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Évora announced that it has appealed a decision made by the Central Criminal Court of Évora regarding a domestic violence case.

“On September 16, 2025, the TRE sided with the Public Prosecutor concerning the increase in the prison sentence, initially set at six years by the first instance,” the statement read.

The judges of the Évora Court of Appeal, in a decision rendered in September, increased the sentence to seven and a half years, as requested in the appeal, for the crime of aggravated domestic violence resulting in the victim’s death.

This case involved physical abuse that led to the victim’s death on February 9, 2024, a result that was not intended by the convicted individual.

The 53-year-old woman, who had been in a romantic relationship with the aggressor since 2021, ended the relationship in early February 2024, a decision not accepted by the man.

The TRE also rejected the appeal from the defendant, who sought to have the prison sentence reduced and suspended.

The defendant was ordered to pay a total of 157,000 euros in compensation to the victim’s three children.

Upon the man’s arrest on May 10, 2024, a source from the Judicial Police revealed that the woman was found dead at her home by her children on the afternoon of February 9, with signs of violence on her head, neck, and upper limbs.
