Of the 43 gynecology and obstetrics emergency rooms in the country, 28 will operate continuously until the end of April, two will only see referred patients and eight will have days off due to a lack of doctors, according to official figures.

According to the information released by the Executive Directorate of the National Health Service (DE-SNS), which decided to maintain the operating scheme that was in force in the first quarter, in the northern region all 13 gynecology/obstetrics emergency rooms will be operating uninterruptedly.

In the Central region, there will be seven maternity wards operating uninterruptedly, one with days off and one with a gynecology emergency room.

In the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, the most complicated in terms of filling out schedules, only three emergency rooms will be working uninterruptedly, two will have referral services – only patients referred by other facilities – and seven will have days off. There will also be a gynecology emergency room and three private sector units to complement the response.

In the Alentejo, three emergency rooms will operate continuously, without interruption, and in the Algarve at least one of the two centers (Faro/Portimão) will always be open.

The DE-SNS will only make changes to the operation of the gynecology/obstetrics emergency rooms from May onwards.
