Portugal’s pavilion at the Expo 2025 in Osaka has been awarded the gold medal for Best Thematic Concept, with the theme ‘Ocean, Blue Dialogue.’ This recognition underscores the importance of ocean preservation, environmental awareness, and global responsibility, as highlighted in a joint statement from the Government, AICEP – Agência para o Investimento e Comércio Externo de Portugal, Turismo de Portugal, and Expo 2025.
The pavilion also earned bronze in the categories of Best Exterior Architecture and Best Presentation. The Experiential Design Authority (TEDA), responsible for the competition, further acknowledged Portugal’s pavilion with fourth place in the categories of Best Medium Pavilion and Best Mascot.
Portugal’s mascot, Umi, meaning ocean in Japanese, symbolizes the longstanding connection between Portugal and Japan, which spans nearly five centuries.
Designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the Portuguese pavilion has welcomed approximately two million visitors. Over 460 entities are involved in this pavilion, which has hosted around 360 events.
“Portugal made a wise choice by selecting the ocean as the central theme for its participation at Expo 2025 Osaka. The pavilion was designed to highlight the oceans’ importance to the blue economy, tourism, and culture,” stated Minister of Economy and Territorial Cohesion, Castro Almeida, as cited in the statement.
According to the minister, these awards acknowledge Portugal’s clear response to sustainability challenges through innovation and a forward-looking vision.
Expo 2025 runs from April 13 to October 13.
