“In the first half of 2025, exports grew by 12%, reaching 199 million euros,” stated the National Association of Canned Fish Manufacturers (ANICP) in a note celebrating the national day of canned goods.
The main export markets are Spain, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Markets such as Germany, Canada, and Japan are also experiencing growth.
During this period, the exported volume increased by 23% compared to 2024, rising from 151,000 tons to 186,000 tons.
The sector generates approximately 4,000 direct jobs and over 7,000 indirect jobs, with 80% of the workforce being female.
Portugal has 20 active canning companies, representing more than 95% of the national production.
Every year, the country produces more than 36 species of canned fish, totaling 800 different references.
The sector’s turnover is around 400 million euros annually.
ANICP celebrates the national canned goods day under the motto “New Generation Preserves Tradition.”
The celebrations include a visit to the exhibition “The Miracle of the Sardine – Memories and Mysteries of a National Icon” at the Padrão dos Descobrimentos in Lisbon.
During the ceremony, the “Golden Can Award” will be presented to director Augusto Fraga, who created the series “Rabo de Peixe.”
This award honors individuals who help to value the canning sector and project Portugal to the world.
