The growth in revenue results from the “increase in private consumption” and the “expansion of e-commerce” in Portugal, a trend already observed in 2024, when the sector’s companies saw their revenue rise by 5.3% to 1.090 billion euros.
Last year, the business related to domestic transportation increased by 6.8% compared to 2023, while revenue from international transport services grew by 3.8%.
According to the analysis by DBK Sectoral Observatory of Informa D&B, the number of companies in the sector, which stood at 10,525 in 2024, has been increasing due to the commencement of activity by self-employed workers and microenterprises in the field of digital urban delivery platforms.
Two-thirds of operators are concentrated in the Greater Lisbon area and the Northern region.
The market share of the top five operators reached 50.7% in 2024, increasing to 73.9% when considering the ten largest express and parcel delivery companies.
Informa D&B considers that investment in information systems and the automation of processes “will be essential” in the coming years, “as a competitive advantage” for a sector where company concentration is expected to remain “both nationally and internationally.”
