A team of divers from the Portuguese Navy deactivated an explosive device at Praia das Bicas in Sesimbra on Wednesday.
The alert was raised by a lifeguard, prompting immediate action by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team from the Navy Divers Detachment No. 1 (DMS1), with support from the Maritime Police and Volunteer Firefighters of Sesimbra.
Upon arrival, in coordination with the Port Authority of Setúbal, the DMS1 team identified and deactivated the explosive device around 6:30 p.m.
The Navy stated that such explosive devices are found “fairly frequently” along the national coast and require “precautions” during handling, as they can be “extremely dangerous.”
“It is advised that whenever such a device is found, it should not be moved, and the Local Maritime Authority should be contacted immediately either directly or through the national emergency number 112,” the statement read.
Praia das Bicas, located south of Praia do Moinho de Baixo near the Campimeco campsite, is popular with surfers and bodyboarders.
The beach is monitored by lifeguards hired by the Sesimbra Municipal Council.
