“Falling for the 4th consecutive month.” Government highlights reduction in unemployment

The government highlighted on Monday the reduction in the number of unemployed individuals registered at employment centers for the fourth consecutive month, noting a decrease of 37,800 registered unemployed since February. 

“Registered unemployment by the IEFP has been declining since February. Compared to May of the previous year, there is a reduction in unemployment of about 3%, with 9,358 fewer registered unemployed,” read a post shared on Instagram by the Executive of Luís Montenegro. 

The number of unemployed registered at employment centers fell by 3% in May, year-on-year, and 4.1% compared to April, amounting to 300,905, according to data released by the IEFP.

According to the Instituto do Emprego e Formação Profissional (IEFP), at the end of May, “300,905 unemployed individuals were registered in the employment services of the Mainland and Autonomous Regions, representing 66.5% of a total of 452,697 job applications.”

This reflects 9,358 fewer people registered at employment centers compared to May 2024. The decrease was influenced by those registered for less than 12 months (-10,751), those seeking new employment (-8,039), and individuals over 25 years old (-6,375),” revealed the IEFP in today’s report.

In a month-on-month comparison, meaning compared to April, there were 12,718 fewer people registered at employment centers. This marks the fourth consecutive month of decline, starting from February.

Regarding the most significant professional groups, compared to the same period last year, “there is a decrease in unemployment in the ‘administrative staff’ (-13.9%), ‘technicians and intermediate level professions’ (-9.2%), and ‘skilled workers in industry, construction, and craftsmen’ (-6.5%) groups.”

Conversely, there was an “increase in unemployment among the ‘unskilled workers’ group (+5.2%),” noted the institute.

Regionally, registered unemployment decreased in all regions compared to the same period last year, with the most significant drop recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (13.1%).

Month-on-month, “a decrease was observed in all regions, with an overall reduction in unemployment of -4.1%,” indicated the IEFP.

By the end of May, the number of job vacancies available reached 18,133 in employment services across the country, corresponding to an increase in recorded job offers on an annual analysis (+5,904, +48.3) and compared to the previous month (+1,308, +7.8%).

The number of couples with both partners unemployed declined by 2.5% in May, compared to the same period last year, and by 2.6% compared to April, reaching 4,708, according to the data released.

“Out of the total number of married or cohabiting unemployed individuals, 9,416 (8.1%) also have a record that their spouse is similarly registered as unemployed at the employment service, totaling 4,708 unemployed couples in May 2025, which represents -2.5% compared to the same period of the previous year,” the report from the Instituto do Emprego e Formação Profissional (IEFP) stated.

Despite the decline, this is a slowdown compared to April, when it had decreased by 4.3% compared to the same period last year.
