The family of Teresa Caeiro has issued a statement refuting claims that the former CDS deputy was a victim of violence, following rumors that she had experienced such abuse.
The note, released days after the death of the former CDS deputy, assures that the former vice-president of the Assembly of the Republic “was never a victim of domestic violence.”
“Teresa’s family deeply regrets and repudiates the rumors and falsehoods circulating about her personal and intimate life. Tegui, as we affectionately call her, was never a victim of domestic violence. The family asks for restraint, discretion, and that her memory be respected at this time.” reads the statement, signed by her father, mother, son, and sister.
Teresa Caeiro died on Thursday at the age of 56. About three weeks ago, she resigned from the CDS, citing disagreement with the party’s leadership direction. Just over a week ago, she also expressed her support for Luís Marques Mendes’ presidential candidacy.

As reported by Jornal de Notícias at the time of her death, the former deputy was found lifeless at home by her son.
Teresa Caeiro was first elected as a deputy in 2002 and the following year joined Durão Barroso’s administration as Secretary of State for Social Security, and later Pedro Santana Lopes’ administration.
After leaving Parliament, she worked as a jurist at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa.
There were numerous reactions to the death of Teresa Caeiro, from various politicians to other public figures. She was remembered by many as someone who left a “mark of humanism” on democracy and dedicated “much of her life to public service.”
