A fan was identified last Sunday for making racist remarks towards a football player in Leiria, as reported by the Public Security Police (PSP).
In a statement released on Saturday, the Leiria District Command of the PSP explained that the incident took place at 6:55 PM on May 4th at the Aldeia do Desporto football field in Marrazes, Leiria.
Officers were called due to reports of disturbances during a youth B, under-17 football match between SC Leiria e Marrazes and União de Pombal.
“Upon arrival, the police were informed that during the football match, the referee halted the game due to a sudden altercation and disruption of order among the supporters present,” the statement noted.
“The visiting fans were outraged after a fan from the visiting team directed several insults and racist remarks at a player from the home team,” it continued.
The suspect was subsequently identified by PSP officers and voluntarily left the premises.
According to the PSP, a report on the infraction was filed and will be sent to the Authority for the Prevention and Combat of Violence in Sports (APCVD) for the appropriate legal processing.
