November is expected to bring rain and colder weather, with the lower temperatures anticipated at the end of the month, while precipitation will mark the beginning of this period, often referred to as the ‘Thursday of the year’.
The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) stated in its analysis revealed this Thursday that Friday and Saturday will see rain, but the start of the week on Sunday will bring more sunshine.
“The weather in mainland Portugal between October 31 and November 1 will be influenced by the approach and passage of a cold frontal surface with undulations, associated with a depression centered over the North Atlantic moving towards the British Isles, followed by the intensification of an anticyclonic ridge on the 2nd,” experts noted in a social media post.
This situation is expected to bring “periods of persistent and sometimes heavy rain in the North and Center regions on October 31 and November 1, followed by an improvement in weather conditions from the morning of the 2nd.”
“Precipitation accumulations over 24 hours will be very significant, possibly exceeding 100 mm in some areas of the North and Center regions, particularly in mountainous areas,” IPMA warned. They also noted that “the expected precipitation values could have impacts such as urban flooding and river basin floods or trigger landslides in vulnerable areas.”
Will the rain also bring wind? And what about the temperature?
On Wednesday, Meteored Portugal released a monthly forecast indicating that while colder weather is only expected at the end of the month, rain is anticipated much sooner. According to IPMA’s recent analysis for the next three days: “Maximum temperature values are expected to range between 15°C and 20°C in the North and Center regions and between 20°C and 23°C in the South region, with a slight drop on the 2nd.”
Thus, although rain is expected to ease by Sunday, colder weather is expected: “The minimum temperature will see a more significant drop, with values around 10 to 15°C in the North and Center regions, dropping to below 5°C in some areas of the interior North and Center on the night of the 1st to the 2nd, and ranging between 13 and 18°C in the South region, dropping to values between 9 and 14°C on the night of the 1st to the 2nd.”
As for the wind, it “will be light to moderate up to 30 km/h, mainly from the south/southwest, occasionally strong on the North and Center coasts, with gusts up to 60-70 km/h, and in highlands, with gusts up to 80-90 km/h.”
“From the 1st, a gradual weakening of the wind is expected, with a shift to the north quadrant on the 2nd,” the statement reads.
IPMA also warns that maritime agitation is expected to be from the west/north with 2.5 to 3.5 meters on the western coast and from the southwest with 1 to 1.5 meters on the southern coast of Algarve.
