Concerts have been scheduled for October 9 at Porto’s Coliseum and November 7 at Lisbon’s Coliseu dos Recreios, the band announced today during a press conference at the venue that will host their show in the capital.
The José Pinhal Post-Mortem Experience was founded in 2016 to pay tribute to José Pinhal, remembered as a “dance master, romantic icon, and prominent figure in northern popular culture,” according to a program note for the events.
After a decade of bringing José Pinhal’s name to stages across the country, the moment for farewell has arrived.
The final two concerts by the band, initially arising as a “spontaneous tribute,” aim to be “an intense celebration of the life, music, and legacy of José Pinhal.”
José Pinhal, a popular singer from Matosinhos, was known for songs like “Tu és a que eu quero (Tu não prendas o cabelo),” “Porém não posso,” and “Magia (Bola de cristal mentia).”
The singer died in 1993 at the age of 41 in a car accident while returning from a concert.
In the early 2000s, a time when the singer had become almost unknown, his work began to attract the interest of Fine Arts students in Porto, who initiated the digitization and sharing of his music, especially in the national artistic circuit.
The “super dance group” emerged in 2016, comprising seven musicians associated with Porto’s Favela Discos, including Bruno Martins (vocals), David Machado (saxophone), João Sarnadas (guitar), José Cordeiro (bass), José Pedro Santos (drums), Nuno Oliveira (percussion), and Tito Santos (keyboard and trumpet).
Alongside the tribute band, the documentary “A vida dura muito pouco” by Dinis Leal Machado was released in 2020, available on the Filmin platform, and the Lusofonia Record Club reissued the singer’s complete discography on vinyl (“José Pinhal – Vol.1”, “José Pinhal – Vol.2”, and “José Pinhal – Vol.3”).
