A 37-year-old man and his 17-year-old son were arrested in Pombal on November 4, suspected of involvement in a carjacking in the parking lot of a supermarket in the city located in the district of Leiria.
The Public Security Police (PSP) stated the suspects were caught “in the act” at 10:40 a.m.
According to the police, the younger suspect entered the vehicle of a 72-year-old victim, threatening them, which led to the victim exiting the car. The suspect then reversed the vehicle a few meters until it stopped due to mechanical issues.
The victim called for help, and a passerby assisted. The suspects fled the scene, pursued by the passerby through several streets in Pombal, until police intercepted and detained the pair.
The PSP further reported that about an hour and a half earlier, the suspects had attempted to steal a vehicle parked at another supermarket in the same city.
The detainees were held at the detention facilities of the PSP District Command in Leiria and appeared in court at 10 a.m. on November 5. Both were remanded in custody.
