A man lost his life at sea while his daughter survived, according to statements. The incident involved a father and daughter who were in the water at the time of the tragedy.
The alert was received by the Machico Municipal Firefighters at 3:30 PM, prompting a response with an ambulance and three personnel.
The National Maritime Authority later issued a statement revealing further details, such as the victims’ ages—the father aged 44 and his daughter, a teenager.
“Upon arrival, it was found that the man had entered the water to assist his 14-year-old daughter, of Irish nationality, when he encountered difficulties and could not return to shore,” the report stated.
The AMN further clarified that “the young girl managed to exit the water with the help of bystanders in the area and received onsite assistance before being transported to a hospital.” She was taken by the Machico Municipal Firefighters to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital in Funchal due to her psychological state.
The Madeira Sea Rescue Association (SANAS) was also present at the scene to conduct the sea rescue.
The Funchal Local Command of the Maritime Police handled the situation.
