Fectrans calls for “thorough investigation” into Elevador da Glória accident

In the immediate aftermath of the Glória funicular incident, the primary demand is not only supporting the injured and the families of the deceased but also conducting a thorough investigation to determine causes and responsibilities, as stated by Fectrans in a communiqué.

The transport unions insist that the investigation should assess both the immediate causes and the impact of management choices that led to outsourcing maintenance services. Additionally, it should review the workers’ reports and any resulting actions or measures taken.

“Carris provides a public service and must have all the necessary technical and human resources to deliver this service safely and with quality,” the statement emphasizes.

The Fectrans also expressed solidarity with the families of the victims and Carris workers, who lost a colleague in the accident.

The Glória funicular, comprising two electrically powered cabins synchronized by cable, derailed late Wednesday afternoon, with the causes yet to be determined.

The accident resulted in the deaths of at least 16 people and injuries to around twenty citizens of various nationalities.

The Government has declared a national day of mourning, being observed today.

The Lisbon city council declared three days of municipal mourning.

In operation since 1885, the Glória lift, operated by Carris, connects Restauradores to the São Pedro de Alcântara Garden in Bairro Alto, along a route of approximately 265 meters.

It is considered one of Lisbon’s icons and is very popular among tourists.
