The president of the National Federation of Doctors (Fnam), Joana Bordalo e Sá, stated in comments to Lusa that the career accelerator and medical evaluations, stipulated by law, are not being adhered to at the Porto Oncology Institute (IPO).
“Doctors at the Portuguese Oncology Institute (IPO) in Porto demand compliance with the law regarding career advancement. The National Medical Union-Fnam, representing over 50% of the institute’s medical staff, reported the issue to the relevant authorities: the General Inspection of Health Activities (IGAS), the Authority for Working Conditions (ACT), and the Directorate-General for Administration and Public Employment (DGAEP),” the union said in a statement to Lusa.
Fnam also sent a letter to the Central Administration of the Health System, the Ministry of Health, and the parliamentary groups of the Assembly of the Republic, highlighting the issue.
The union leader mentioned that Fnam has been attempting to resolve this matter through dialogue with the Porto IPO for about a year, but no progress has been made.
Joana Bordalo e Sá indicated that if the situation is not resolved after the reports to IGAS, ACT, and DGAEP, “all legal means will be employed to ensure the law is observed, and normalcy is restored along with the allocation of due back pay.”
“This illegal stance by the Porto IPO is demotivating doctors and causing them financial loss in the order of thousands of euros because evaluations have not been conducted since 2017, neither has the career accelerator been applied,” which has been legally mandated since January 1, 2024, she emphasized.
