A 40-year-old man was arrested on August 21 for domestic violence against his parents, aged 61 and 64, in the municipality of Felgueiras.
The arrest was made in the context of an investigation into domestic violence, during which the National Republican Guard (GNR) determined that the individual “exercised physical, psychological, and financial violence against the victims, his parents.”
The aggressor was detained pursuant to a detention warrant outside of flagrante delicto, according to a statement from the security force sent to newsrooms on Sunday.
The man was brought before the Judicial Court of Penafiel and was placed in preventive detention.
This action was carried out by the Porto Territorial Command, through the Penafiel Unit of Investigation and Support for Specific Victims (NIAVE).
More than 62% of inquiries completed last year related to the crime of domestic violence were archived, reveals the Annual Internal Security Report (RASI).
Notably, according to the Annual Internal Security Report (RASI) for 2024, domestic violence and minor intentional physical offenses are the types of crimes with the highest number of recorded reports.
While minor intentional physical offenses rose slightly (1.1%), domestic violence saw a slight decrease, as in 2023, of 0.8%.
“However, it continues to show very high levels of reporting (30,221), with an increase in violence against minors (+7.2%). The crime of domestic violence against a spouse or equivalent remains the one with the highest number of records among all reported crimes (25,919),” the document states.
